City close on Portuguese ace
Melbourne City are closing in on a swoop for Portuguese central defender Nuno Reis, who has agreed a three-year deal.
City have been on the lookout for a new centre-half following the departures of a couple of key players since the end of last season, and now appear to have their man.
The 29-year-old has vast experience playing throughout Europe for the likes of Metz in France, Greek giants Panathinaikos and more recently Levski Sofia in Bulgaria.
Reports claim he has been keen to play in Australia for some time, and he will now get that chance with Melbourne City.
Speaking at a members’ forum on Wednesday night, director of football Michael Petrillo refused to name names, but confirmed a deal has been done for a new defender.
The player he talked about is Reis and a deal should be confirmed in the coming days.
"We think he's a player who really suits the way we want to play, he's had a great career in Europe with some really good clubs, represented his country at all underage levels," Petrillo said.
Reis will help fill the void following the departure of Harrison Delbridge, who joined Incheon in South Korea over the close season, while Austrian defender Richard Windbichler returned to Europe.
City are back in action on Saturday when they take on Western United and will be looking to bounce back from the defeat against Adelaide United last time out.
They have played two so far, winning one and losing the other, and will be keen to take the points against Western.
City are priced at?11/4 to win the minor premiership.
