Jets duo closing on return
Newcastle Jets have been boosted by the news influential duo Nigel Boogaard and Johnny Koutroumbis are closing in on a return to action.
The Jets could do with a lift as they sit second from bottom on the A-League ladder and are battling with Melbourne Victory to avoid the wooden spoon.
And the news that both Boogaard and Koutroumbis are not far away from returning from injury will be music to the ears of coach Craig Deans.
Koutroumbis picked up an MCL injury in the clash with Adelaide United last month, while Boogaard fractured his fibula in the same game.
Both players are back running but Deans cannot put an exact date on their return. However it looks as though Koutroumbis will be back first.
"Nigel and Johnny are pushing hard in their rehab," Deans told the club's website. "Johnny is probably a little bit ahead of Nige, Nige has a fracture in his fibula, so that doesn’t heal overnight.
"He’s probably a week or two ahead of Nige but look it would be good to have some options."
The Jets face Macarthur FC on Sunday night and there is a chance that Lucas Mauragis could return from an ankle injury.
"He’s back full training for the first time this week and like I said, we have a five day turn around now, so we can put him through some decent sessions and see how he goes," Deans added.
"He adds some energy and some running and some enthusiasm to the team, so he will definitely be a chance."
The Jets are priced at?8/11 to finish bottom of the A-League ladder.
